Laurie McMurchie Q.C.

With one in two marriages in Alberta ending in divorce, divorce is a very common life transition for many families.  Often children are involved.  Laurie is committed to providing a process for resolving family issues which is civil and respectful, and which permits families to engage in thoughtful planning through this transition in order to reach mutually acceptable and lasting resolutions.  Her goal is to minimize the negative impact of conflict on families and children.

Laurie’s practice emphasizes resolving disputes without court intervention. Her focus is alternate dispute resolution processes, including collaborative family law; lawyer-assisted mediations and negotiations; mediation; mediation/arbitration; and arbitration. In 2000 she began to shift her practice away from a litigation or court-based orientation to a non-adversarial orientation for dispute resolution. She has successfully concluded many negotiations, collaborations and mediations, and has acted as arbitrator in numerous cases. She also acts as a consultant on the subject of pension division on marriage breakdown.

Laurie was one of the founding board members for the Association of Collaborative Family Professionals (Calgary). She served on the Standards and Training committee for several years, and continues to be an active member of the association.

Laurie also conducts trainings in Interest-based Negotiation, Introductory and Advanced Collaborative Law for family lawyers and estates and trusts lawyers, Communication Skills and other related topics. She is a Sessional Instructor at the Faculty of Law at the University of Calgary teaching Dispute Resolution II with Elaine Seifert Q.C.  She has been a frequent presenter for the Legal Education Society of Alberta, The Federation of Law Societies and the Canadian Bar Association, has taught the Bar Admission Course in Family Law, and has presented, with Elaine Seifert, at the annual conference of International Academy of Collaborative Professionals.

Laurie has been recognized by her peers as one of the “Best Lawyers in Canada” through Lexis Nexis in the areas of family law and alternative dispute resolution.
